Murakim was part of the most important international avant-garde movements in Japan in the 1950s, called the Gutai, which “examined its aesthetic strategies in the cultural, social and political context of postwar Japan and the West… in an expanded, transnational history and critical discourse of modern art.” Passing Through is an example of what Murakim calls his ‘painting’ where his ‘marks’ were visible impressions created by running through a series of large paper panels stretched like canvas. watch here.

“Castle unveils an entire new body of work in two consecutive solo shows at Barry Friedman Ltd and Friedman Benda… featuring a series of new unique and limited edition furniture, each with a generosity, freedom of expression and confidence in execution not seen before. Multiple dimensions are explored as Castle expands on the possibilities of voids and volumes.” Take a look INSIDE.

Roth was not an artist who tolerated boundaries. In seeking to pulverize them, he elevated the processes by which things happen, embracing accidents, mutations, and accretions of detail over time… ‘Dieter Roth. Björn Roth’ culminates Hauser & Wirth’s 20th anniversary and inaugurates the opening of the gallery’s new, second exhibition space in New York City.”

The Artist is Present

Marina Abramović is both her subject and medium in her artwork, exploring her ‘limits of her being’. “Revealing only her face and hands, concentrating her corporeality in these two elements. She continually repeats an action regarded as typically feminine, reinterpreting it in the context of art history through her performance: The artist combs her hair forcefully, without a pause, for more than 50 minutes. During this time, she repeats the sentence “art must be beautiful, artist must be beautiful” like a mantra. The constant repetition of the words and the action give the work a sustained intensity that puts the artist and the audience into a trance-like state, in which overcoming the physical pain frees the body and mind from the conventions of Western society and culture.” via.

LEIGH LEDARE wiels contemporary art

“Alma (2012) is an image of Leigh Ledare’s mother lying naked on a turquoise floral duvet, legs spread, wearing only high heels and stockings. The photograph has been modified by a child’s scribbles with coloured crayons. That child, the titular Alma, has completely obscured the woman’s vagina… what makes a girl instinctively want to eliminate the genitals and face of Ledare’s mother? What role does the child play for the artist?…”

THE SALON: ART + DESIGN

Fifty-three international dealers, many of who are exhibiting for the first time in New York, were a part of The Salon this year, the first year of the collection at the Park Avenue Armory curated by Sanford L. Smith & Associates and the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, Paris. The combination of genres through contemporary art and antiques are “the roots of modern design.” Take a look INSIDE with MATERIAL LUST at some of our galleries we are currently lusting after.
