LEIGH LEDARE wiels contemporary art

“Alma (2012) is an image of Leigh Ledare’s mother lying naked on a turquoise floral duvet, legs spread, wearing only high heels and stockings. The photograph has been modified by a child’s scribbles with coloured crayons. That child, the titular Alma, has completely obscured the woman’s vagina… what makes a girl instinctively want to eliminate the genitals and face of Ledare’s mother? What role does the child play for the artist?…”

THE SALON: ART + DESIGN

Fifty-three international dealers, many of who are exhibiting for the first time in New York, were a part of The Salon this year, the first year of the collection at the Park Avenue Armory curated by Sanford L. Smith & Associates and the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, Paris. The combination of genres through contemporary art and antiques are “the roots of modern design.” Take a look INSIDE with MATERIAL LUST at some of our galleries we are currently lusting after.

GO SEE: ROSEMARIE TROCKEL: a cosmos
the new museum through January 20, 2013

“the epicenter of “Rosemarie Trockel: A Cosmos” is a small, tiled room devoted exclusively to the work of this mid-career German artist; reminiscent of aWunderkammer, it mixes the fantastical, the erotic, and the perverse.”

COME CLOSER: art around the bowery 1969-1989

Featuring original artwork by over fifteen artists who lived and worked in the Lower East Side on or near the Bowery in New York, “Come Closer” explores its identity during the 70’s and 80’s through its “extremes of metropolitan decline—municipal neglect, homelessness, and substance abuse. as landlords and civil services abandoned the neighborhood, the subsequent cheap rents and permissive atmosphere drew artists downtown.” The exhibit is now open at The New Museum until January 6, 2013. “despite many articles lauding her as a woman working in what was then perceived to be a man’s world, the impression is that she did not regard her gender as something that held her back.”

Recently appointed curator of New Museum’s 2015 Triennial, Lauren Cornell, spotlighted in the fall design issue of T Magazine, has come a long way from her childhood idealization for the director of the Whitney and ”has many reasons for championing difficult art: ‘because it is new, and thus not accepted or considered ugly and unhip; because it is old and forgotten and important…’ ” To follow her 2005 work with the museum on the inauguration of The Generational: Younger Than Jesus, the 2015 Triennial will be her third edition of The Generational where she will explore “how art can point toward the future in a moment when we’re so deeply obsessed with the past.”

“The Werkstätte Carl Auböck was founded in the 19th century—one of many workshops in Vienna specializing in bronze-casting. However, Carl Auböck II was one of the very few Viennese students who attended the Bauhaus in post-World War I Weimar, and when he returned to the Workshop he brought inspiration from this new design movement. Expert craftsmanship and superior quality materials such as hand-sewn leather, polished bronze, and various woods became the signature of the Bauhaus-inspired Auböck Workshop…”
